Article Marketing 101: Finding The Discipline To Write

June 17, 2009 By Lisa Angelettie 5 Comments

I love to write. I have always written – basically my whole life. Whether it was a daily diary entry when I was in love and in 5th grade, or when I was writing for a major newspaper or trade magazine — I was always writing. The thing is, I always wrote better when there was pressure on me to write. A deadline that meant my job! A deadline that meant no freelance check if it wasn’t delivered on time. Honestly – if it wasn’t for “fear”, I’m not sure if any of my writing would have been delivered on time. And there lies the problem with entrepreneurship — how do you find the discipline to write like you should for your business when the only one to hold you accountable is you?

These are a few suggestions…

1. Create a sense of urgency in your marketing. Give yourself a deadline and commit it to a calendar, paper, etc. of when you have to have something written – good, bad or boring:-)

2. Get organized. Sometimes we lack the discipline to follow through on all of our great article ideas because we are all over the place in our business. I have been guilty of that for sure. A good barometer — if your bedroom is cluttered, most likely the details of your business are too. Get some organization going in your business and finding the time to write will be much easier then you think.

3. Put it on paper. Commit yourself to writing a certain amount of articles per month and write it down in a marketing plan, checklist, or even a to do list. The act of writing it down and committing it to paper makes a powerful statement in your subconscious.

4. Cut the crap! Make the decision that today is the last day you will procrastinate. Whether or not you love writing — the proof is in the pudding. The more your write, the more results you will see in your business. In the way of the Nike™ – just do it!

5. Imagine the ramifications if you don’t write. Think in terms of the way I use to think when I was working for someone else. If I didn’t write and didn’t hand it in on time – there was a penalty to myself and ultimately to their business. They depended on my articles and I depended on their payments. Imagine if you didn’t write for your business? The money you would lose. The impact it may have on your business. The inconsistency of your marketing message being delivered in your marketplace can have direct affects on your business – no cash flow! No results! Remember that…

Writing Articles = More Income

Can you think of other ways that seem to help you and could help others create the necessary discipline to write articles for their business? If so please leave a comment.

Why New Coaches Should Write Articles

May 26, 2009 By Lisa Angelettie 3 Comments

The coaching profession is growing by leaps and bounds. People are seeking to reinvent themselves in today’s tough economy and are becoming life coaches, business coaches, wellness coaches etc. Unfortunately as the growth of new coaches on and offline explodes, it will require more work on new coaches parts to get noticed and get hired. That’s the biggest reason why new coaches should and must write articles.

Writing articles on the web is THE most cost effective marketing strategy for coaches because it’s key to:

1. Attracting traffic to your site
As a new coach it is essential for you to build an online presence message via your own articles and content hosted on your own website. No longer a glorified “business card” , it’s important that your website contain useful and interesting articles and information which attracts new prospects on a daily basis.

2. Educating potential clients about your practice
Teach others about your coaching niche, what you do, and how you can benefit them in their lives or businesses via articles.

3. Spreading your coaching message
Your articles are like little marketing gems, broadcasting your coaching message to whoever reads them. This really helps create a qualified client visit your site versus one who is just surfing the web and randomly finds your site.

4. Getting noticed by other coaching professionals in your niche
Are you a small fish in a big pond? Want to create joint venture relationships with other coaches? Other coaches have to know you are out there. Joining organizations and associations are not enough. Establish who you are via articles and get noticed by small and big coaches in your marketplace.

5. Establishing you as an expert and not as a “newbie”
It’s been a tried and true formula for decades. Want credibility? Get published. Article marketing is one of the quickest ways to get published and establish credibility and visibility in your coaching niche.

Now if you are a new coach, you probably already have a lot on your plate. It takes a lot to start a new business, especially when you are the only one doing the work. So article marketing may sound daunting, especially if you do not consider yourself a really good writer – but I assure you that you do not have to worry about being a great writer. In fact, all you need to do to get started is to write a list. If you can write a grocery list that includes at least 5 to 7 items – then you can write an article. Just like this article. This started as an article of 5 tips for new coaches and I simply expanded it by explaining each tip. Now it is an article.

Article Marketing Help: I Can’t Write-Should I Use Article Marketing?

March 28, 2009 By Lisa Angelettie 1 Comment

Q: I can’t write, so should I use article marketing as a marketing strategy for my business online?

A: The biggest myth about article marketing is that you must be a seasoned writer to have this strategy work for your business. That is simply not true. In fact, one of the biggest internet millionaires online and one of my mentors is a horrible writer. I hate reading his information products! Yet the bottom line is that he knows what he is talking about and he always delivers excellent information — regardless of the sentence structure and punctuation:-)

In fact the key points that all article marketers have to worry about have little to do with actual writing:

1. Write an article that answers a question for your market
2. Publish the article somewhere credible & visible
3. Promote the article so that others know about it
4. Profit from the article by promoting your own or affiliate products

These four key points are all you need to be concerned about when launching a successful long-term article marketing campaign for your business. If you want to learn more about how to pull these four elements of article marketing together and get cranking out articles that attract qualified traffic back to your site, I recommend the Articology System. Articology is an easy article marketing training program created specifically for the new writer.

Are You A Writer or A Book Glutton?

December 19, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie 3 Comments

If you are a writer or an aspiring writer, I really think you will enjoy the site Book Glutton. You can upload your own work for free, and readers can go there and read and chat about your book right on the site. You can create groups and leave comments about the book you’re reading. It’s a great way to build buzz about your work. This site is best for writers of fiction and typical non-fiction trade books.

If you are a voracious reader, this is a great way to read some of the classics, like my favorite Jane Austen, for free. Check it out: http://bookglutton.com

Article Marketing 101: Spell Check Your Writing Please!

November 17, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie Leave a Comment

I subscribe to a well-known marketer’s monthly print newsletter. It’s — okay. I don’t love it. And I don’t absolutely think it’s junk. But for 40 bucks a month — I think that it should at least be spell checked!

While I am a firm believer in getting people out of their perfection traps, and promoting the saying that writer should just get it done instead of worrying about getting it done perfectly — let’s be reasonable here.

Marketers who charge me for their information and do not have the common decency to spell check and grammar check their work, leave me feeling cheated. I truly believe that this really successful “guru” speeds through writing this newsletter every month because it’s just one more thing to do on his plate.

Perhaps he isn’t outsourcing enough of his other tasks, because when I tell you that there is some obvious grammatical errors every month — that make me have to stop and re-read them so that I understand what he just wrote — I’m telling you the truth.

It’s just plain ole’ annoying, and I feel — unprofessional. Not when he has a huge staff working for him. Heck – even my nine year old daughter could do a basic spell and grammar check in Microsoft Word!

Listen everyone. It’s important. Don’t spend the entire day on it. Don’t even spend an hour on it. But take 10 minutes after you’ve written something – especially something that you are going to charge people for and do a spell and grammar check.

The quality of your work is a reflection of you as a person and as a business owner.

By the way, if there are any errors in this post – I’m sorry:-), but hey at least I didn’t charge you for it!

What Are Your Working For?

November 16, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie 1 Comment

Sometimes in the midst of writing an article, a chapter in an infoproduct, or some other type of writing for my business — I become overwhelmed or uninspired.

So then I move on to all the fun social marketing stuff I like to do for my sites. Submitting comments to my favorite blogs. Creating squidoo pages or hubpages. You know all that type of stuff. But then the next thing I know my kids are asking what’s for dinner.

So then I cook, clean, walk the dogs, bla bla bla — and next thing you know it’s time for the 11pm news!

Okay — there isn’t enough time in the day. We all know that. But sometimes if you are stressed with all the work in your business, on your business, plus life outside your business — you just have to ask yourself sometimes:

“What am I working for?”

When I do that — I realize that it’s so very clear what I’m working for…so I can continue writing everyday instead of working a 9 to 5 that keeps me away from my family. I work so that I CAN be home to cook for the kids, walk the dogs, heck — feed the dogs! I work so that my 3 girls can see that working for a living can be fun, passionate, and fulfilling.

I work at my business because I want to. Because I love it. And if I always remember that — I don’t mind writing the extra article, writing the extra blog post, writing a few more paragraphs for that new product. Especially –writing stuff that people will want to read and use. Not something to just say I wrote it.

So ask yourself today — what are your working for? And if it’s worth it to you — do something a little extra in your business today to celebrate that.

Laid or Layed: A Grammar Lesson

November 13, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie Leave a Comment

It was 1:00 am and I was sleepy. All my potato chips were gone and I was still writing. When you get in a groove, you just have to go with it.

I was writing an article or something and stopped right in my tracks. As I wrote the next sentence — I wrote the word laid but things started getting a bit fuzzy. Was laid right? Or should I have spelled layed?

Well — I did a quick search and thankfully found this quick little quizzy post on writing for business and the proper use of grammar. Thank God! It was hurting my brain trying to remember all the golden rules of grammar. Check out the 3 second post…
