Modeling Vs. Copycat Marketing

As an internet marketer, I am subscribed to tons of newsletters and ezines. Especially both the free and paid versions of experts who have shaped my business. I learn a lot of from them and try to implement many of their suggestions and techniques within my own business model – using my own voice. That’s called “modeling”.

About a year ago I subscribed to someone’s ezine who clearly was a student of a mutual marketing coach we both followed. Now while this coach has said in workshops etc. to “copy her” — she doesn’t mind. I beg to differ. For example, this particular student will take emails she sends, copies them verbatim, and plugs in her own links to her own products or affiliate products. And I mean if I got the original email from the coach on Tuesday, she is sending one out on Thursday. Now that is “copycat marketing”.

While I did email this student and tell her to at least re-write her copy, I would never put her on blast on my blog by naming her. I’m sure her other readers have figured out her shtick too — because I would guess that many of her subscribers found her via one of the coach’s salesletters (testimonial ad). She is only making herself look lazy, unprofessional, and insecure. Now I would never trust any product she creates, and would never recommend her to any of my clients.

Lesson here? Don’t copycat your business after someone else’s. It’s important for your credibility and profitability to find your own voice.

What Is Credibility Marketing?

A friend of mine asked me recently, while we were in Starbucks:) – “Just what the heck is credibility marketing anyway?” I think if I were to describe it honestly, it would be the purposeful acts and actions you take to build the credibility of yourself and your brand. Credibility builders are things that create “trust” between the client or customer and you.

Seals
You probably don’t even pay much attention to this, but when you go to a retail website to purchase something, you are subconsciously relieved when you see trusted seals such as the UPS logo, Fedex, Mastercard or Visa, BBB (Better Business Bureau), TRUSTe, HackerSafe etc. This is because these companies (among others) have spent zillions:) of dollars building their credibility – so much so that if you add their logo to your own site, you get to piggyback off of their trust factor. Just make sure you are adding a logo that you actually use and are affiliated with, because if you fake it and someone finds you out — that defeats the point of credibility right?

Associations
If you align yourself with the “right” associations and organizations in your field, that will go a long way in helping you build your credibility as a “trusted professional”. This will work in building credibility with colleagues as well as the public. Even if your customers don’t know what the organization actually does in respects to your profession, that’s okay – because once they see that you are even affiliated with some sort of larger entity, they tend to trust you more. Whether they recognize the organization or not. Of course ones that they know are better. Google your niche’s name plus the word association (ex. marketing + association) and see what results you come up with. While there is a fee to join most organizations, it’s worth it to piggyback off of the credibility they offer and they actually may have information, workshops, and conferences that you could use!

Information
What kind of content are you putting out in the world about you and your business. Do you sound like you know what you are talking about? Do you have a pulse on what your potential customers and clients want from your industry? Have you published a LOT of articles, white papers, reports, ebooks, etc. on topics in your field? It is key when you are looking to build credibility in your field that you appear knowledgeable and professional. Don’t put out crap! Put out good content and put it out often.

Article Marketing 101: Who Are The Specialists In Your Niche?

It’s simple article marketing 101, that when you plan your article content, business plan, marketing plan, and paid content strategies etc. for your business – that you should consider the competition. Do you know who the specialists in your niche are?

Take a little bit of time this weekend and catch up on your competitor stalking:) This is how you do it…

1. Sign up for your competitor’s newsletters and whatever other free goodies they may have. Be sure to use an alias — because there is nothing more annoying than when I see that a competitor has signed up for my info with no intentions of ever doing business with me. Blaah! You can do this easily with a free gmail account. I created one specifically for competitor newsletters.

2. Take a look at your competitor’s info in Alexa. While this isn’t necessarily an accurate look at stats (only computers with the alexa browser toolbar installed are tracked), it does give you a gage of your competition’s traffic and importance.

3. Google their name and any variations of it. Or better yet, add their name as one of your “google alerts”, and you will be able to see on a daily basis what blogs, sites, etc. have picked up their content and/or have written something about them. This gives you a great idea of just how “good” and “respected” and popular the site owner’s content is.

Also – by using this technique you can check on how popular your own content is and the best way to distribute it. I personally was able to see through adding an alert on my name which national publications were mentioning me and that ezine articles was the best distribution method for my own articles. More people were picking them up via that site.

Checked Your Site for Outdated Links Lately?

I have several websites and I am always in the midst of a new creative process. That’s my thing. But what can fall through the cracks are the little things (which are really huge!) such as making sure links to my articles, sites, special offers, products & services are all up to date and working properly.

Have you recently changed a payment processor? Affiliate software? Website hosts? Then you need to go double check the links back to these very important items.

1. Make sure that all the payment and referral links back to your products and services are working properly. I recently switched a product’s processing from clickbank to paypal, and forgot to check all the links on my sales page for that product. Once I fixed them – I received an order about 2 hours later! Imagine the potential income I missed for that careless brain fart!

2. Make sure that all the links you have out there to your websites are all correct and live. If recently changed your branding, and therefore switched urls etc. – just make sure that all traffic flows to your new page(s).

3. It’s soooo important to really try to choose one affiliate software option and stick with it. Because if you switch – it is very hard to convince all your current affiliates to then go and fix all the links on their sites as well. BUT if you do – make sure to check your site’s affiliate sign-up page for dead links and to email your affiliate list about updating their links etc. If you need a little help with setting up your affiliate program the right way, try the AffiliateDashboard tutorial. For an easy to implement affiliate system to use in your business, I like Affiliate Royale. If you are an affiliate of mine, you have already had a taste of this system.

4. Sometimes you may need to check the links for the images on your site. Especially the little ones that you don’t pay much attention to and/or that are hosted on another server. Many of these sites go out of business or make changes of their own – and then you have question marks in there place. It’s always a good idea to optimize your image text titles and descriptions for times like these. Use your keywords.

Lastly, if you don’t have the time to do this – outsource it. And no it doesn’t have to be this intricate outsourcing plan to someone 500 miles away! You can use a student or babysitter – heck even my 10 year old can spot outdated links:) Just get it done.

Thumbs up for Trafficology Newsletter

I can’t remember when it was, maybe a few years ago — but there was a big push on the net for the launching of Simpeology by Mark Joyner and Trafficology by Nitro Marketing…and I got confused. I didn’t know who was offering what. Everyone on the web was throwing free membership offers at me. And so, I said the heck with it.

A few months ago – I joined a different marketing gold membership group and a few days ago – I received as a free gift an issue of Nitro Marketing’s Trafficology Newsletter (Platinum Edition).

At first, I was like “whoa!”, did I sign up for this thing again?

But then I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the envelope (read that it was a free gift) and received my two audio cd’s and an info-packed printed newsletter chock full of traffic building tips. Very nice! There was even a free tool for members – which was a free download of the new “Peel Away Ads” ad tool that is getting so much “buzz” lately. All I had to do was go to the companion Trafficology site and download it at the members area.

I was excited because this was a tool I was planning to purchase anyway. But FREE is even better:)

I really have to admit that while I’m not sure what happened when they launched, that they now have really created a wonderfully useful newsletter that is full of “new” information for online business owners like us:)
