I Understand The Urgency…

When you first build a site, you are anxious to see results, especially in the search engines. While you can manually submit your site to search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing, you can also see faster results when you fast track your url submission by using what I call a “power linking” approach.

How Power Linking Works

When I first started online as a psychotherapist, I use to write for a major magazine-styled site (BellaOnline) about mental health. What I didn’t realize at the time was what those articles were doing for me and my visibility in the search engines. When you publish articles with a link to your site on a high ranking and highly trafficked website that search engines (such as Google) frequently spider (visit), the search engine sees the link to your website, and adds that link (your site) to it’s search engine database. They do this because they saw your link on a site that is already “in the system” and so you get the benefit of being automatically added by association. It pays to be friends with some of the cool kids right?

Here it is broken down:

1. Identify a popular, well-trafficked site.

2. Get a link to your website on that site.

3. Google visits the popular site and sees your link.

4. Google then adds that site’s page and any links found on it (your link) to their database.

5. Now when you search for your site in Google, you will appear in the results.

So instead of waiting for your manual submission to be approved, you get an automatic “in” when Google finds your link at a site they already know and rank. Now the key for this strategy to work is that the site needs to be considered important by Google in order for you to instantly reap the benefits of the connection. That’s where the “power” part of power linking comes in.

Look for sites where the:

1. Alexa ranking is good (remember that the lower the number, the better it is). For this strategy to work, I’d look for a site that has a ranking of at least under 600,000.

2. Page rank isn’t as important as it use to be, but I wouldn’t bother with a site with a PR0 or PR1.

3. Site owner accepts guest posts, because that’s going to be the fastest way for you to get a powerlink from their website. No one does reciprocal linking anymore.

Give the search engine spiders at least 24 hours to find your link after your post has gone live. Then go check by doing a search for your site name. While you’re waiting, get some fresh content ready to go for your own site and feed those search engine spiders yourself!
