17 Mindset Shifts That Will Transform Your Business — In Record Time!

January 29, 2012 By Lisa Angelettie 9 Comments

For a very long time, I would compare the success of my business to other business owners in or related to my niche, and it would make me sick (literally)! The big reason is that compared to many coaches and mentors who I started out with in this niche (so around 2005-6), I was on a SLOW learning curve. It took me way longer than I hoped to catch on to and multiply strategies that were working in my business, as well as identify and eliminate ones that weren’t. It was ridiculously frustrating, and I was starting to believe that I wasn’t good enough. I almost quit more than once.

So undoubtedly, this was a mindset I had about myself and my business that was destructive and putting me in a really “low” place energetically. I would step away from the business for days — because of it. Which of course wasn’t helping, and honestly was giving me the entrepreneurship blues. (cue the blues guitar please:)

Fast forward to today and I am in a totally different place energetically as well as realistically thanks to Brenda Rivas & Fabienne Fredrickson. I have in essence “caught up” to most of my peers — and the ones that I haven’t, I applaud their success instead of envy it. Was it easy to make these shifts – nope. But it was crucial to my success and I know that it probably will be to yours as well.

[This is a text heavy post today — but I was in the zone!]

1. Stop Thinking That You Are In A Competition For Clients

You have to step outside of yourself a minute and think realistically. There are oodles of companies who do the same thing and yet they all seem to make money and stay in business. Even with McDonald’s domination of the fast food industry, there are plenty of companies that are just fine: Wendy’s, Burger King, KFC, etc. The same principle applies to your business. There is a limitless supply of clients available to you.

2. Stop Thinking Smaller Is Safer

There is a tendency for many entrepreneurs to dream small, act small, and therefore get only small results. Once you understand that if you think bigger and BELIEVE in bigger dreams –then you will ultimately create bigger results.

3. Be Clear About What You Want

A confused mind creates confused thoughts and energy. If you are confused — the universe will be confused. Be clear about what you want to accomplish today, this week, this year, over the next 3 years. If you aren’t sure, get help around that. That way every daily step you take towards your business is purposeful and congruent with what you want.

4. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For What You Want

I have run into many entrepreneurs who are great at what they do but often think “Hey I’m smart. I should be able to figure out this thing by myself. Why should I ask for help?” Okay — yes you are smart, creative, passionate and all of that — but there is no shame in asking for what you want. Asking the universe, God, etc. AND asking peers and mentors all around you. You’d be surprised how many people will help you.

5. Remember The Bigger Picture

It’s easy to fall into the daily business of growing your business: creating content, social media, working with clients, etc. But what’s your bigger picture. Keep that in mind. Is it establishing your LEGACY? Is it creating more time with your FAMILY?

6. Fill Your Subconscious And Your Soul With Good Stuff

When Oprah first talked about the OWN Network, I have to admit that I was one of those people that said “I love the idea of this but I don’t know how many people are really going to watch positive television day after day.” I’m a bit embarrassed by this but the point of this article is to be truthful and hopefully insightful. So there it is. But I started to finally “get it” about 9 months or so ago. Especially at the end of the day. I think it’s much better to go to bed reading a uplifting or entertaining book than watching a horror flick or for that matter the World News! Filling my soul with positive reading, television, movies etc. has really helped my occasionally “cynical” outlook on life.

7. Remember You Are In The Business Of Serving People

Most people in business want to make money. There’s nothing wrong with that, but remember the money should be a financial reward for serving your clients and your customers.

8. Be Mindful Of What You Are Attracting

If you are attracting low-paying, highly-demanding, clients then you need to take a closer look at why. Sure it may be your marketing materials, but it’s deeper than that. You have created, selected or approved those marketing materials. You are unconsciously attracting the types of clients that you don’t like.

9. Surround Yourself With Your Positive Peeps

This was a difficult one for me. Many of our closest relationships are with family members or friends from childhood and unfortunately it seems to be that more of our “forward thinking” pals are people we meet along the way in our journey — and not from the past. Perhaps college. Or people you meet while building your business. This isn’t a hard and fast rule. But regardless of HOW you met the “negative nellies” or less forward thinking people in your life who are holding you back — you’ve got to let them go. Surround yourself MORE with folks who will support and lift you towards your goals, or who at least are doing what you want to be doing. Shout out to my positive peeps Coach Kelly, Therese Prentice, and Ange’ Anglade.

10. Change Your Relationship With Money

If you have a “scarcity” relationship with money, meaning you feel badly when you invest in yourself, you frequently have buyer’s remorse, you select lower quality products to save money, you constantly are thinking about your “lack” of money, the bills you owe, or the client you didn’t close and what that is costing you — you’ve got to turn this around really SOON. The more you stay in the energy of “not having” the more you will not have. I know this seems to be easier said than done — but its simply a shift in perception. If you don’t have any money right now, if things are super tight, then that is a sure symptom of a negative mindset around money.

11. Change What You Regularly Say To Yourself

In other words – STOP your self-sabotage. How many times have you thought “Maybe I should just get a job” or “People will discover I don’t know what I’m talking about”. That’s your subconscious scaring the hell out of you! Tell him or her to shut it up, and start changing what you say to yourself in front of others as well as in the dark.

12. Start Recognizing Gratitude

Do you wake up and write in a gratitude journal? Does that question make you chuckle? If so, that means you are probably living in a low feeling place. You wake up frustrated. Overwhelmed. Discouraged. Instead of joyful, enthusiastic, and optimistic. It’s important that you give recognition and be grateful for all that is RIGHT with you personally, your family, and your business.

13. Allow Yourself To Feel Especially During The Tough Times

Everyone has very different ways for how they handle the rollercoaster emotions that come when running a business. My husband gets very passionate about his business and gets very animated about it — especially during a challenge. I on the other hand would numb myself or escape with novels, television, outings with some of those “negative peeps” I talked about earlier. This of course did nothing to make me move forward and get past whatever the challenge was, so I had to make some shifts. And I realized that the first one was allowing myself to “feel” the emotions (whatever they be) and work through them and then get over to the other side and keep pushing.

14. Upgrade Yourself!

Remember Beyonce’s hit “Upgrade You”? Well it was all about upgrading her man to the finer things in life. Introducing him to new things. This is what you need to do for yourself. It’s crucial. In fact, I have a client who wants to start a new business in a very competitive market but she still stands in a long line, in a hot office, to pay her cable bill! That’s not living a “platinum” lifestyle. Why would anyone invest in you if you don’t invest in yourself? So where you can make upgrade changes to your lifestyle – do so. Grow! Experience! Permit yourself to treat yourself ROYALLY!

15. Let Go Of Resentments

Let go of the bad feelings for family members who wronged you, friends who betrayed you, or resentments of someone’s success. Holding onto those resentments is absolutely toxic, because it often leads to strong feelings of anger, frustration, fear, or unworthiness that get in your way. “Why did they treat me this way, I can’t understand it!?” or “I can’t stand that she’s a millionaire and has no talent!” (I hear that all the time about Kim Kardashian — but fail to understand why people are so mad.)

16. Let Go Of Other People’s Negative Perception Of You

When someone unsubscribes from your list, do you feel a little twinge of “awww”? And then do you read why they unsubscribed, which some experts recommend that you do, but for the most part I advise against and this is why…Too many people take those comments personally and then they interpret them as there is something wrong with them. Or their content. You have to let that go and realize that no one can determine who you are — only you. All you can do is be the best that you can be.

17. You Must Take Personal Responsibility

It’s easy to play the blame game when things go wrong, but when you do this you are putting the POWER of what will or will not be in the hands of someone other than yourself. You must realize that only YOU create the life that you have now and the one that you want to have with every decision and action you take. There is no big, dark “force” working against you and your business — you are the FORCE.

Okay, this was a really long post, and typically I would have advised to break this up into at least two articles — but I appreciate that you’ve made it down this far in the article:) Now I’d love for you to answer this question: What 2 mindset shifts will you implement starting today or tomorrow? Or are there any other shifts you’ve implemented that you’d like share?

How Entrepreneurs Can Quickly Beat Writers Block

January 15, 2012 By Lisa Angelettie 8 Comments

Do You Have Writers Block?

If you are an entrepreneur who shies away from writing articles because you struggle with writer’s block, do not waste your time trying to beat it by using traditional “writers block” books and courses out there. Those are typically written by fiction authors who are trying to help other fiction writers — and that’s a whole different animal!

Fiction authors typically write from a purely internal creative place. Entrepreneurs like us, need to also write from an external influence — and that’s solving the problems of our clients. When you write content that meets the needs of your clients, you will never run out of article ideas, that is article marketing 101. So when I work with new clients who tell me that they hate writing because it takes them hours to get just one article written — I know what the problem is immediately…

1. They have not identified their client’s problems and struggles.

2. They do not know how to talk to their ideal clients in a way that they will understand.

3. They have not clarified their marketing message.

And Really What All This Means Is That They Are Not Clear About Who Their Ideal Client Is. Are You?

The real struggle and the real block comes up when you start moving forward in marketing a business but aren’t 100% sure who you are talking to because you are wishing and hoping that everyone will see the value of what you do. You want anyone who will pay, and this is marketing from a place of “lack” and “desperation”. This is why you are blocked and this is how you can beat it…

Regardless Of How Sure You Think You Are,  Re-evaluate Who Your Ideal Clients Are And What Transformation You Provide For Them

Okay, I already see your eyes rolling up in your head:) But I want you to really consider what I’m asking you to do today. If you were really spot on about who you clients are, would you be struggling around idea generation?

So I today I want to get VERY specific. More than you ever have before. Ask yourself what they look like, how much money they make, what they do for a living, are they married or single, do they have children, what is their education level, where to they hang out, what social media to they use, what other sites to they visit,  and any other details you can think of.

Don’t waffle or waiver on this. If this is who your ideal clients is than that’s who they are and that’s who you should target. You cannot speak to EVERYONE. It is not effective nor authentic marketing by any stretch.

Now that you know who they are, it will be much easier for you to craft a marketing message that speaks to your ideal clients. If you are still blocked and can’t come up with 10-25 article ideas, my recommendation is to go back to the drawing board and do another exercise around getting clear about who your ideal clients are.

Recognizing When Done Is Good Enough

November 8, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 6 Comments

Recognizing When Done Is Good Enough

I love this excerpt from Melinda Emerson’s (#smallbizlady) recent article Are You Ready To Finish The Year With A Bang?. In it she discusses many things that were spot on when it comes to getting the most bang out of your business over these last few months of the year. But it’s this quote that really resonated with me because I find myself working through this issue with 99% of my clients. Maybe you too? 🙂

Melinda Emerson

Done is Good Enough. Your small business brand will evolve over time. Don’t be one of these people who have not released your new website or newsletter because you are still messing with your logo or layout.  No one cares about your logo but you, and you can always revise it later.  Just get it out there.  Get feedback, and adjust your branded as needed.  You are supposed to cringe at the original art work years later.

If I had waited until things were perfect to start my first business (Girlshrink), I wouldn’t have been totally fulfilled as a woman and mother, because I would have never gotten the website off the ground. Back then I didn’t even know what I wanted or needed to make the site “perfect”. In fact, not to long ago I stumbled across some “hater” who was talking about my advice column. He said it was on the ugliest website he’s ever seen and he can’t believe that people pay me for my advice:)

Well I’ve gotten the last laugh. I have helped more people with their relationship problems over those first six years online then he probably ever has. And yes I did get paid for much of it. And yes my website left something to be desired — but it didn’t matter. My message and my experience resonated with my clients — and so will yours.

So while even today I am still guilty of the desire for all things to be in place before I move on to step two or step three, etc. — I catch myself. I recognize the insanity of it and I move on. Done is way better than waiting on perfection. Done leads to income!

Is Fear Of Criticism Getting In Your Way?

October 15, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 4 Comments

Is Fear Of Criticism Getting In Your Way & Stopping You From Creating The Business Of Your Dreams?

Fear Of Criticism

I have always prided myself on the fact that I give personal and speedy customer service to my clients and customers. While I do have several virtual assistants for specific things, I try to answer many customer service emails myself, because I remember being on the other end of that. Heck, I still am! And I always appreciated when a business owner contacted me directly. Not for everything though – not like a change of email address or something small — but for the bigger issues. Say when someone has a question about a product or program I have. I created it, and I’m asking you to trust me & pay me to teach you something, so why can’t I take out a few moments to answer a few questions about it? Hey – that’s just me🙂

But the other side of this – is that this opens me up to ALL the customer service emails. The ones that thank me (which I love:), that ask me questions like I’ve already mentioned, and also the ones that have something negative to say. The critics! And for a long time – those were the emails that use to truly bother me.

I wouldn’t lose sleep or stop eating, but I could hear the words in that email if I went to write something or try a marketing strategy. It was a nagging little voice that had me second guessing myself about many things. And second guessing is simply a waste of time and permits a lot of bad energy into your business. Next thing you know, you need someone else to cosign on every major decision because you aren’t sure if you are making the right ones. Ugh! What a mess!

Or here’s another example — have you ever had a great idea but then talked yourself out of it by the next morning because of the criticism you anticipated from others or from one particular person? Do that enough and you will have left enough great ideas behind that could have made you a millionaire 10 times over.

Or how about the “professional” critics? Are you a service professional in a licensed or certified profession and you’ve got colleagues constantly questioning your philosophy, your marketing, your ethics, your new income stream? These are people who either fear the unknown or fear you becoming greater than them. Cutting you down is their quickest solution for feeling better about playing small or safely. Imagine if Dr. Ruth listened to her colleagues?!

So How Did I Get Out Of Criticism’s Way?

1. I realized that there are just some people who have allowed the fear of criticism of others to seep into all parts of their lives. If you’ve grown up in a family of critics – chances are that you fear it, will do anything to avoid it,  but that you also have had your fair share of giving it as well. (This was me.) So it was important to realize first that this was a part of who I was and it had to change. You know — you cannot change what you do not acknowledge.

If you find yourself criticizing others in your niche, in your mastermind group, in your family — then I’m talking especially to you! You know who you are. Recognize it and decide today that it’s just not acceptable any longer. You will not be able to grow the business that you were meant to have if you fear other people’s criticisms and if you criticize others. Let it go.

2. I know now that people who criticize are really dealing with some of their own issues. It has nothing to do with you. For instance, if a fellow entrepreneur criticizes how much you are charging for your new product or program — it’s probably because they have their own issues around charging and cannot get what you are asking or are afraid to even price their stuff at that price point. Their criticisms are stemming from their own fears, inadequacy, jealousy, etc.  — not from anything you are doing or not doing.

3. Criticism is not truth. Just because someone said it, doesn’t make it so. When you take it on – you are validating it’s truth. Therefore the real key here is to not take it on as truth. Drop it. Forget it. Ignore it.

4. Work and play in your business fearlessly! Fear of criticism should never stop you from being creative, for trying something new, for stepping outside the box, for being uniquely you. Try to remember the big WHY you’re in business to begin with. Why do you do what you do? Who do you do it for? My big WHY is my family. And all I have to do is look at a picture of them in my office or look outside in the yard and see my kids playing to remember that my fear of criticism is unfounded and not real. Keep your big WHY in mind and you’ll be able to push criticism completely out of your way to greatness!

Are You Losing Faith In Your Business Too Soon?

September 18, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 3 Comments

Hey Solopreneur…Are You Losing Faith In Your Business Too Soon?

As a solo entrepreneur, it’s very easy to to become frustrated and have your resolve tested by the mixture of daily business tasks, income generation, promotion and finally net income that you need to make. After all is said and done–is your business income producing or is it a glorified hobby?

For example, if you spend weeks creating a telecourse, promote it for a few more weeks, and only 5 paying clients enroll (and that has happened to me!), your energy may be zapped and you feel deflated. Or how about the client who asked you 10 million questions about your coaching program, signs up, and then decides they can’t afford it. (Ugh!)

Entrepreneurs, especially coaches and consultants, can start to feel really discouraged when things like this happen and then we start to question if the course was a good idea or if we didn’t do enough to “close” the client. Then we begin to think that maybe we just don’t know what we’re doing at all, and wouldn’t it be safer to return to get a job or perhaps try another niche. (Yikes!)

Here’s the deal though. The issue is NOT the telecourse you created nor is it that you did something wrong when initially working with your almost-new client; the bigger issue here is that you are losing faith in your business way too soon.

I know exactly how you feel…And these are the three strategies I have used and show others how to use to avoid jumping ship way too soon.

Solopreneur Mindset Strategy #1 – Maintain Realistic Expectations

Once you are on several marketers lists, it’s easy to start to buy into the “hype”. Everyone claims that they have the secrets and the solutions for taking you from zero to six figures instantly. Yet deep down you know that these claims are far from the truth. You want to believe that someone can fast forward your business so that you can make big money quickly, but it’s a false hope, and it’s zapping your energy.

The reality is that you will build your business slowly and steadily like any other six-figure and seven-figure entrepreneur. One step at a time. That is the reality of a successful business. Anyone who tells you differently is setting you back mentally. Be realistic. You can absolutely achieve the type of success that you deserve and live an abundant life, BUT that doesn’t mean that it will happen overnight.

Solopreneur Mindset Strategy #2 – Mistakes = Valuable Experience

First, I want to say that every successful business owner has made mistakes. Has made blunders. Has had embarrassing setbacks. That is part of the learning experience. Don’t look at every mediocre result as a failure, but rather a chance for learning and understanding.

This is a great opportunity for you to ask your list what types of information they are interested in learning and would pay for — which will help when creating your next product or program. And this is an ideal time to ask your mentor to look over your products, services, and marketing materials to help fine tune things for the next launch.

Solopreneur Mindset Strategy #3 – Go Harder!

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I have found in my own business that mediocre results were often preceded by a mediocre effort. This effort could very well be unintentional on your part, because you didn’t know exactly everything you needed to do to produce the type of results you were looking for. That’s ok…

That just means that there is room for growth, for a shift, and for an opportunity to dig deeper or what I like to say “go harder”. Go deep inside yourself and find the energy, the strength, and the motivation to keep going and go even harder at what you do. When you do, there is no choice but for you to see movement in your business.

This is probably one of the most important mindset strategies that saw me through some tough times. When I consider all the times that I wanted to give up, change my niche, go back a traditional private practice, I cringe. I almost made a HUGE mistake. Instead I grew more strength from each mediocre result or mistake and just dug in and went even harder. Finally, I found myself on the other side of mediocrity and on the side of profitable business owner.

While the path of a solopreneur is not always an easy road or a “safe” path to success — the journey and your ability to stay the course is what will ultimately help you thrive and flourish as a solopreneur, as a mentor, and as a human being.

Do you have any other strategies that have saw you through tough times? Share them in the comment section below.

How To Get #1 Search Engine Rankings Using The Google Mindset

September 4, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 2 Comments

Getting Into The Google Mindset

It is no secret that writing high quality articles is my #1 traffic generator and list building strategy for ALL of my websites. In fact, writing good articles is an advantage that many coaches and consultants have because many of us are “natural writers“. We have a message and we want to help people with some sort of problem, so we have a lot of content already spilling out of us. We’ve just got to get it all down and spread to prospects in a BIG way. One of the best ways I have found to get my message out to thousands of people is by taking advantage of the search engine powerhouse Google.

Google has been sending me oodles of free traffic to my main and niche websites for many years. In fact, I have held the #1 position for over a 100 of my keywords for over seven years! That’s seven years of Google updates and Google slaps. Seven years of the ups and downs of marketing trends. And the reason why my #1 positions have never waivered is because I have always chosen to have the Google mindset when writing my articles.

how to get the google mindset

For me, the Google mindset means to write my articles with my readers needs #1 and the search engine’s criteria #2. That’s really what Google honchos want from us as webmasters and that should be what we want for our businesses too. First, we need to serve our clients. And then we need to make sure that we can do it in a BIG way, so that means we should write using good search engine etiquette.

So What Is The Google Mindset?

Not too long ago there was an article published on the Google webmaster site about how Google identifies a high quality article and a high quality site. While they were not going to reveal their secret algorithms for ranking content, they did give webmasters a LOT of insight on the questions that they ask when they evaluate a piece of content (and how we should evaluate our own content as well). Here they are:

1. Would you trust the information presented in this article?
2. Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?
3. Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?
4. Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?
5. Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?
6. Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?
7. Does the article provide original content or information, original reporting, original research, or original analysis?
8. Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
9. How much quality control is done on content?
10. Does the article describe both sides of a story?
11. Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?
12. Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
13. Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?
14. For a health related query, would you trust information from this site?
15. Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source when mentioned by name?
16. Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
17. Does this article contain insightful analysis or interesting information that is beyond obvious?
18. Is this the sort of page you’d want to bookmark, share with a friend, or recommend?
19. Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
20. Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine, encyclopedia or book?
21. Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
22. Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
23. Would users complain when they see pages from this site?

Why Getting Into The Google Mindset Is Critical Right Now

If you hadn’t heard, Google has been implementing Google Panda which is a long-term algorithmic shift that has involved several updates. The first update, Panda 1.0, rolled out in February and has been followed by several more, all of which have affected a growing number of sites. The updates, as of this writing, include:

Panda 2.4 on August 12th.
Panda 2.3 on July 27th or so.
Panda 2.2 on June 18th or so.
Panda 2.1 on May 9th or so.
Panda 2.0 on April 11th or so.
Panda 1.0 on February 24th

It is more important than ever to get into the Google mindset for writing high-quality articles and content for two reasons. One — you don’t want these updates to affect your site, your articles, and their ranking. You want to stay where you are or rank even higher for your keyword terms. Two — you want to be ready to step into the place of some of your competitors who were affected by this update or who will be very shortly. As some of your competitiors fall in the rankings for certain terms, that leaves room for entrepreneurs with the Google Mindset to step up and take your rightful position of #1 !
