Internet Marketing Glossary

August 20, 2009 By Lisa Angelettie Leave a Comment

My friend and coach Marlon Sanders created this cool internet marketing glossary of terms for his “newbie” members, and so I thought I’d share it with you…

Continuity: The means something that people are charged
for regularly, typically monthly or quarterly. In the biz,
we call this “continuity income” or recurring billing.
Newsletters are usually paid for monthly as are membership
sites. The reason you see a lot of emphasis on continuity
offers is it provides steady income and gives you a way to
pay your bills. The classic example is the book club of
the month programs.

Forced Continuity: Forced means you don’t have a choice.
The way this works is when you buy one product, you’re
given a free trial of a newsletter, membership site or CD
of the month club. The trial is usually 14 to 30 days.
Sometimes as long as two months. At the end of that time
period, if you don’t cancel, you’re charged monthly for
whatever it is.

Some marketers get people in continuity billing then NEVER
send emails or communications hoping people will FORGET
about the purchase and let the billing continue forever. I
find this to be legally risky. If you do forced
continuity, make sure people know they’re being charged
and can cancel without jumping through hoops.

Back End: The back end of the business is everything AFTER
the initial sale. In other words, it’s the follow up
business. In the ideal world, you break even or make a
small profit on the initial sale (or what we call the
“front end.” And you make your profits on the upsells,
downsells and subsequent sales.

Upsells: Additional products or services offered at the
point of the sale. As crazy as it sounds, the EASIEST time
to make another sale to the customer is when they already
have their credit card out! Any additional product offered
is an upsell.

Downsell: If the upsell is declined, another offer for a
lower price than the upsell is made. This is called a
downsell.

Target market: A market is a group of people who are in
the MARKET for a product or service. A target market is
the market you’re targeting. For example, males online
between the ages of 35 and 65 who want to start a
home-based business would be a target market. Stated
differently, it’s the people who are the potential buyers
of what you sell.

Sales letters: In this business, we often use very long
sales letters similar to the direct mail letters you
receive in the mail. We call these sales letters because
they’re me-to-you letters that SELL something. These are
different from a brochure, which is an impersonal
communication. Sales letters are written as though you’re
talking to the person directly. They’re more personal and
persuasive.

Membership site: These are password protected sites that
have content delivered regularly and often have a forum or
other way to interact with members.

Forum: These are places you go to talk to others who share
a common interest.

Opt ins: When someone joins your email list, they “opt in”
to receive emails from you.

Double opt in: When someone joins your email list, they
receive an email asking them to click a confirmation link
to PROVE they subscribed to the email list. This is an
anti-spam feature and is now standard practice.

Autoresponder: This is a software program that lets you
send email broadcasts to everyone on your list. It will
also send a sequence of emails any number of days apart
that you specify.m

Shopping cart: The ordering mechanism you use to get
people’s name, address and credit card or check info and
process their order.

Affiliate program: A program where you promote a vendor’s
product or service and receive a commission when there’s a
sale. The classic example is Amazon.com. You can link to
books on Amazon. And if a visitor to your web site buys
one of them, you get a small commission.

Associate program: Same as affiliate program

Banner ads: Those square or horizontal ads on web sites.

Ebook: Basically the same as a printed book but delivered
online, quite often as a PDF.

PDF: Portable Delivery Format. This is a uniform format
for delivering digital information. A standard of method
of delivering documents on the web.

White paper: A research paper or report delivered as a
PDF.

Name Squeeze: A term trademarked by Jonathan Mizel. See
Squeeze page.

Squeeze page: A page with only one purpose to obtain or
“squeeze” a name and email address, or email address
alone, from the web visitor.

Lead capture page: Same as a squeeze page.

Power Squeeze page: See squeeze page

Hits: Some stats programs measure web site traffic by
hits. This is not a particularly accurate way to measure
visitors.

Unique visitors: Stat programs attempt to identify actual
visitors and eliminate duplicate visitors in a 24-hour
period.

Cookies: The way things get tracked on the Internet. These
are little text files put on your computer. They contain
tidbits of information that allow stuff to be tracked. In
the case of affiliate programs, the way we track sales and
credit the correct reseller with the commissions is
through the use of cookies. The cookie simply contains
that affiliate’s ID number.

PPC: Pay-per-click advertising. Google made PPC a dominant
advertising method. As a ppc advertiser, you run ads on
Google and ONLY pay when someone clicks on your ad.

Monetize: When you find a way to make money with
something, you monetize it. So you’ll hear people talk
about monetizing their traffic. All their talking about is
finding a way to make money off of their web site
visitors.

Traffic: Visitors to your web site or web page are
traffic.

Product launch: When a number of affiliates promote one
product o one day or one week. Typically last for one or
two weeks and often involve heavy promotions by affiliates
who are trying to win cash and prizes.

Aweber: One of the main autoresponder services.

One Shopping Cart: Another autoresponder service that also
contains a shopping cart, ad tracker, affiliate software
and other bells and whistles.

Ad tracker: A program that lets you create links that
track when people click on them and then also count
actions or sales that follow the click.

Affiliate software: Software that allows you to run your
own affiliate program and pay affiliates commissions when
they sell your product or service.

Clickbank: A marketplace for ebooks sold by affiliates.

Why New Coaches Should Write Articles

May 26, 2009 By Lisa Angelettie 3 Comments

The coaching profession is growing by leaps and bounds. People are seeking to reinvent themselves in today’s tough economy and are becoming life coaches, business coaches, wellness coaches etc. Unfortunately as the growth of new coaches on and offline explodes, it will require more work on new coaches parts to get noticed and get hired. That’s the biggest reason why new coaches should and must write articles.

Writing articles on the web is THE most cost effective marketing strategy for coaches because it’s key to:

1. Attracting traffic to your site
As a new coach it is essential for you to build an online presence message via your own articles and content hosted on your own website. No longer a glorified “business card” , it’s important that your website contain useful and interesting articles and information which attracts new prospects on a daily basis.

2. Educating potential clients about your practice
Teach others about your coaching niche, what you do, and how you can benefit them in their lives or businesses via articles.

3. Spreading your coaching message
Your articles are like little marketing gems, broadcasting your coaching message to whoever reads them. This really helps create a qualified client visit your site versus one who is just surfing the web and randomly finds your site.

4. Getting noticed by other coaching professionals in your niche
Are you a small fish in a big pond? Want to create joint venture relationships with other coaches? Other coaches have to know you are out there. Joining organizations and associations are not enough. Establish who you are via articles and get noticed by small and big coaches in your marketplace.

5. Establishing you as an expert and not as a “newbie”
It’s been a tried and true formula for decades. Want credibility? Get published. Article marketing is one of the quickest ways to get published and establish credibility and visibility in your coaching niche.

Now if you are a new coach, you probably already have a lot on your plate. It takes a lot to start a new business, especially when you are the only one doing the work. So article marketing may sound daunting, especially if you do not consider yourself a really good writer – but I assure you that you do not have to worry about being a great writer. In fact, all you need to do to get started is to write a list. If you can write a grocery list that includes at least 5 to 7 items – then you can write an article. Just like this article. This started as an article of 5 tips for new coaches and I simply expanded it by explaining each tip. Now it is an article.

Adding A Phone Line For Your Home Business

June 21, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie 10 Comments

Have you taken a look and noticed how many of your competitors have a customer service phone number listed on their sites? Do you have a phone number listed for customer or client support on your site?

Think about how much it would add to your credibility if someone could call and talk to a human voice. Imagine the sales “objections” you would be able overcome by talking to someone immediately. Even having a phone number on your site period – is a credibility booster — even if customers never use it.

Of course these are some of the problems you may run into…

1. Your phone company charges you some astronomical amount for adding another line in the house

2. You look into one of these live-person type customer service companies – and again big bucks!

3. You use your cell phone for business, but forget while your out at the Gap with the kids to answer it professionally — and uh-oh it’s a potential client! Not a good look.

Well – the solution I have tried and boy do I wish I had a little stake in this company is a new invention called the MagicJack. Basically what it is – is a phone jack that you plug into the USB port of your computer, then plug in your land line phone, and you have phone service. Completely new phone number. Voice mail. Call waiting. Call forwarding. Free local and long distance calling (United States and Canada). Sound quality is great.

What I really like about it is that all you have to do is take the MagicJack with you when you travel, plug it into your laptop, and your phone travels with you. No dropped calls. No monthly bills and fees.

The inventor of MagicJack is offering a free year of service when you buy it for only 40 bucks. After the year, it is only 19.95 a year for unlimited local and long distance calling. Now that is a GREAT investment for you business and practically no cost. Learn more about this great little invention over at: MagicJack.com

What Is An EIN Number?

May 29, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie 7 Comments

If you work-at-home, you may have noticed that organizing your tax returns were a bit messy if you use your own social security number for your online business. If you’re not ready to incorporate or create an LLC, an easier alternative would be to at least sign up for your own Employer ID Number (EIN).

Use your EIN number for signing up with all the affiliate programs and other sites you that normally ask and require a social security # for paying you. Remember that your social security number should be protected all the time, in order to protect your identity, and you shouldn’t use it on the web. Using your EIN number works just like a social security # – yet functioning like a sole-proprietor of your home business. Another plus is that an EIN number appears much more professional as well. You will really feel like you are building your own home business – and not a hobby.

You can sign up for a free EIN number here: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/modiein/individual/index.jsp

1 Quick Way to Help Get Your Business Well Into 6-Figures

April 6, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie Leave a Comment

Here’s a great tip from someone I LOVE and trust to give me great information on how to make more in my business – Kendall SummerHawk (aka, the “Horse Whisperer” for business)

She walks her talk, and has created a high 6-figure business (she brought in OVER $564,000.00 last year alone!) doing what she loves.

Pretty impressive, wouldn’t you agree?

Anyway…here’s a great tip she just shared with me:

Ever noticed how much time it can take you to get anything (and everything!) done in your business? Well, that time is also costing you BIG TIME by distracting you from working on creating profitable offers, relationships and opportunities. One quick trick that can make a real difference to your bottom line is to cut the amount of time you give yourself for a project in half.

I know, sounds impossible, right? It’s not, and, even better, it will force you to look at HOW you are approaching a project. If you only have half the time to get it done you’re more likely to ask for support, reach out to new resources or not settle for delays or get stuck in perfectionism. Just imagine how many more leads and clients you could create if your marketing projects were done in half the time?

Want more business-building tips like this one? Then you’ll love Kendall’s FREE upcoming teleseminar call where she’ll share “My 6 BEST Marketing, Money and Soul Strategies I Used To Turn My Business Into a High 6-Figure Success (and How You Can Too So You’re Making The Money You Rightfully Deserve, Helping The People You’re Destined To Help)” (Best yet, the call is free!) Declutter Your Home Office Workspace

March 11, 2008 By Lisa Angelettie 5 Comments

I think that work at home moms may have a dirty little secret — a lot of us have messy home offices! Well, at least I do. And I’m finally admitting it — and more importantly, doing something about it! I am in the process of getting rid of all of my home office clutter, and making room for new supplies, new ideas, new energy.

It is so true that your home and work space are reflective of what’s going on with you. And I have been very “all over the place” with the direction of my business for a long time. And it showed. Now that I have gained a lot more clarity on my brand, what products and services I intend to offer, and how I intend to deliver those goods — I am clearing out all the other clutter.

Home office clutter may include papers, books, your kids toys etc. BUT it can also include old ideas written on sticky notes and outdated mind maps.

Hey, there’s a whole slew of experts out there who specialize in this stuff right? So all of you closet messy desk-preneurs…let’s get out there and clean the clutter and watch our productivity multiply.

Quick Tips:

1. Start filing everything. Receipts. Invoices. Ideas on scrap pieces of paper. I use file folders in three different colors. Yellow for creative files. Red for sales related files. Manilla for bills, receipts, etc.

2. Use sticky notes. You can quickly write ideas or to-do lists on sticky notes and put them away from your deskspace on the wall. I wrote about how to create a detailed infoproduct outline using post-its™ in a past issue of my weekly marketing ezine. I just love ’em!

3. Honor the space. Although we work at home, we have to honor the fact that it is our work space and we are generating income in this space. Respect your home office, as you would respect any office setting. Let it be reflective of the six-figure success you will soon become!
