Google Is Retiring Google Buzz

If you were using Google Buzz and want to save some of your content (perhaps you got a testimonial from someone via Google Buzz) then Google has left some pretty easy directions for accessing that info once the Buzz is gone. This isn’t really unexpected. Google Buzz never really took off because it really was a mediocre attempt at capitalizing on the Twitter phenomena — but they redeemed themselves with the introduction and social media explosion of Google+.

What Is User Generated Content & Do I Need It For My Business?

User generated content is any content on the web (articles, video, audio, images, social media content, reviews, forums) that has been contributed by the users of the website and not the administrators. So for example, in Amazon’s (Amazon.com) case, their product reviews are a HUGE part of the user generated content you will find on their website.

If you notice, not only does Amazon ask for you to review products that you’ve bought from them, but they’d love it if you added a video review and/or your own product images. So why do they do this? Well, it’s really simple.

1. User Generated Content Builds Trust

User generated content builds trust between the site owner (in this case Amazon) and potential customers (you). If Amazon and another site are selling a product at the same price point, same delivery charges, but Amazon has 10 reviews on the product and the other site does not — which site are you more likely to purchase the product from? Statistics prove that most people will trust the site with the user reviews more than the site that has nothing.

2. Search Engines Love User Generated Content

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing all love user generated content. Google even admitted that they now add user generated content (such as social media content) as a factor when weighing the importance and relevance of a website. That’s BIG!

3. User Generated Content Makes Your Job Easier!

We can use Amazon as an example again. It’s up to Amazon administrators to set up the products and pages, but it’s up to users to create reviews, ratings, user lists, wish lists, profile pages and more. And let’s face it, it’s the reviews and all this other content that really seals the sale. This makes Amazon’s job so much easier. We the users make the sale for them!

Okay so we’re not Amazon, but let’s look at how we can use user generated content in our businesses. Take a look at some of the leaders in your niche. Do they have a lot of comments on their blog, do they permit guest blogging on their site, do they have a strong presence on social media sites like Twitter & Facebook? This is all user generated content and this is an area where solopreneurs have a real chance to shine.

So should you use user generated content in your content marketing plan? Heck yes! Can you do it all — probably, but it’s better to pick one thing, run with it, and do it well.

Movie rental company Netflix raised a lot of ruckus this year when they raised their monthly feels by 60% (wow!) and as a result over a million subscribers dropped the service. Now they’ve decided to separate their online video streaming from their by-mail service and are still calling the online service Netflix and the by-mail service Qwikster. So this is the SECOND flub they made…

They did not do their social media research, because if they had, they would have realized that someone has already taken the name @Qwikster on Twitter and he’s probably not going to give it up without some sort of cash payment.

Learn your lesson from Netflix’s error, and make sure you aren’t totally sold on your new business name until you’ve done domain address, Twitter, and Facebook research.

How To Attract More Ideal Clients With Google Plus

If you haven’t heard, Google Plus (Google+) a.k.a. The Google Plus Project, is Google’s second (or third) attempt to throw their hat into the social media arena. Google Buzz didn’t quite reach Facebook or Twitter status, but Google+ has a real shot of being their social media ace in the hole. Let me explain…

The reason why I am liking Google+ so far is that it mixes the best of both worlds together: search and social media. Google knows search. So it makes perfect sense that they develop a tool that capitalizes off of that while blending all the yummy relationship building stuff of social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, & LinkedIn.

In it’s limited launch over the past month, Google Plus has already surpassed over 20 million users. That is tremendous growth especially when you compare it to it’s competitors (Twitter & Facebook). It took both of them years to reach that member level. Okay so that’s impressive! Next, there are already reports of business owners who have seen an increase in referral traffic to their sites from Google Plus. While these are mostly from big, content-driven sites, the example is still great news for little guys like us.

So How Can I Use Google Plus To Help Me Get More Clients?

Google will be releasing a business account version of Google Plus soon, but in the meantime you will be able to use your personal Google Plus account the way that you currently use Facebook and Twitter and that is to share information and build relationships with other people on the web – of course these are people who can possibly be your ideal clients. In order to naturally and organically attract these types of clients to you, there are three elements of Google Plus that you should focus on:

Number #1

The first important element is your Google profile. This is what people will see when they click on your profile icon. If you already have a Google account to use Google Analytics, Gmail or Adsense, then you already own a Google account – you just need to make sure that you fill out the profile information within that account. This is VERY important. If you do not have a Google account yet, then you will need to be invited by another user to join Google+.

At the time of this writing, Google+ reached it’s capacity of beta testers, but you can always check back here: https://plus.google.com/ to see if space is available. Another strategy is to ask someone with an existing Google+ account to invite you. Or you may be able to back door your way in if you create a Google account (sign up for a different product) and select their webmaster options.

Number #2

Creating Circles. Google Plus makes it very easy to create your circles of influence. Much like Twitter you can follow people who don’t follow you and vice-versa, but you also have the ability to broadcast your news feed or your updates to all of your circles, a few of your circles, or one. This gives you the ability to really tailor fit and control what kind of information you send to whom. I’m sure you can see how tremendously powerful this is for entrepreneurs.

Write client attracting content. Google Plus, just like all things Google, is content driven. The reason why people are so excited about Google Plus is because of the power of user approved searched. Imagine writing and publishing an article on turkey bacon. Then when one of your prospective clients searches for “turkey bacon” in Google, not only does your article come up but it comes up with a +1 icon next to it. When your content has the +1 icon next to it, it’s like someone on the web is giving you “this stuff rocks!” approval. And that type of unsolicited user-generated testimonial is what will convert someone looking for information to someone who wants to invest in YOUR information!

Facebook Fan Pages – New Features & Layout By Next Week!

As the entire social media field continues to grow and spread, there are a few leaders in the genre that have outstepped the rest. Facebook is one of those social media hot steppers. All you need to do is look around for the proof. An Oscar nominated movie was created about Facebook. What we think of us “mainstream” businesses such as our national news programs and large franchises all have television commercials with their little Facebook “F” logo at the bottom of the screen.

So I think it’s key to share with my community (solopreneurs, coaches, authors, speakers, etc.) that it is important to get on the Facebook train now and hang on for the ride! I am by no means an expert in social media or Facebook, but what I can tell you for sure is that the “math” speaks volumes to me. The percentage of  “referred” traffic coming from Facebook to my website is much larger than I ever realized and is growing on a weekly basis. Not by leaps and bounds because I haven’t really done much Facebook marketing, but enough that I am taking it much more seriously than I used to. Numbers don’t lie. I attract highly qualified prospects from my Facebook pages.

So this is what I want you to do this week:

1. If you don’t already have a Facebook account. Create one. It’s free and many of your prospects are on there already searching and surfing for your information.

2. Next you can create a Facebook Fan Page around your niche “raw food diet” or  yourself “Lisa Angelettie” or perhaps one of your products “Articology”.

3. With the NEW changes that are optional right now and will be mandatory starting March 11, you will be able to manage your fan page more like your main account such as liking other pages and vice-versa, getting email alerts that someone has left a message on your wall (I really love this feature), a change in the navigation placement (moved to the left), and more.

4. Depending on your niche, you will notice that 90% of Facebook Fan Pages all look the same – like a basic blue and white Facebook fan page. There is a 10% though, that have taken their pages to the next level and created a little customization as an extension of their brand, etc. (Ex. This really should be it’s own article, and I’ll consider writing one later, but to get things going — your Facebook Fan Page is a great place for putting your content (your articles) in front of eyes in a very laid back way. This is where some people will learn what your latest article is without having to remember to visit your site or look at your RSS feed. This is where you will also get a lot of great feedback on your content and perhaps suggestions and ideas for more.

Your Facebook Fan Page is a place for a more informal conversation about what it is you do and how you can help others. It’s also a great place for adding content that wasn’t “enough” for a 400 word article but you felt is was important to share with your community. (I tend to do this)

How To Customize Your Facebook Fan Page – Part 2

Read Part 1

In the first article we talked about how to add a fan page to your primary Facebook account and how to customize that fan page with a larger sized avatar for your business. There are thousands of fan pages that still have the basic Facebook page look, so this gives you an immediate advantage, and also what I call a little sumthin’ sumthin’; but today we are going to talk about how to even add a little more pizazz to your page by adding a tab to your Facebook Fan Page which can be the primary landing page for your fan page, also known as the welcome page.

So here’s one of the big “secrets” that a lot of people want to charge you for. Facebook has their own language (Facebook Markup Language – FBML) which can help build pages on their platform, it’s just that many people don’t know about it or know how to access it. For a while now, we’ve watched some of our favorite businesses Facebook fan pages get a little personality and we’ve been wondering “HOW!” Who on earth is creating all these cool customized pages?

There are many Facebook Fan Page experts out there who are doing this for a living and they are really good at it, but if you want to make some tweaks on your own, you can absolutely do it without their help and this is how:

1. Login to your account and manage your new page.

2. Go to Apps

3. Add FBML

4. When you add it, you are basically creating another page (tab) to your Facebook page – so you will give it a name at this time. I named mine “WELCOME”. This is a good name for your page if you’re going to make your landing page – but you can also name it something keyword rich as well. That’s probably the smarter thing to do:)

5. Your apps section will look something like this now:

6. Now you can Go To App and edit the code to add whatever graphics, video, subscriber code, etc. you like to customize your new welcome page. This is a great place to put an opt-in box for your newsletter, ezine, or autoresponder list. You have to use the FBML to make it look and work properly though – so it’s a good idea to read up on how to do this over at Hyperarts. They have a great FAQ about FBML that will help you customize your page.

7. You can create more than one FBML page, so you may you want one as a welcome and another for something else related to your biz. Maybe a page detailing your signature product.

8. If you want some great FREE detailed videos on how to do all this (which includes a template) then try http://www.facebook.com/freefanpagetemplates. Quite a few videos, but good information, and for free. I enjoyed the author’s Australian accent as well:) Nice change of pace.

9. What’s the point of all this? Well the goal is to really convert our Facebook Page visitors into “FANS”, and being able to customize and manipulate pages that will be more attractive and enticing will go a long way.

10. So what should you do next? Well, I’d love for you to visit my Facebook page and “LIKE” me as I have plans to start adding instructional videos to that page instead of just YouTube or my blog. I think video articles get great exposure on Facebook, so those are my plans. After you do that, it’s time for you to work on your own page.
