Hot Topics For Search Engine Traffic

May 18, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 1 Comment

Hot Topics For Search Engine Traffic

While I typically encourage my community to write evergreen articles and content in order to get maximum shelf life, there are those times when I like to write articles on hot topics to get a surge of search engine traffic to my site. I also call these types of articles Magic Bullet Articles (I teach more about this in Articology).

I think these types of articles are critical for periodically breathing a little life into your site and for also showing a “real-time presence”. In other words, these types of articles allow your readers to know that you are there and your are current – not just evergreen.

So why not take 30 minutes out today and write a hot topic or magic bullet article. Your traffic stats will love it:) Remember that in order for this to work, you need to select a hot topic that you can tie into your site’s niche. Okay, so with that in mind here are a few ideas for you to get started in the next 48 hours:

1. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver

Discuss their divorce and the infidelity that led to the divorce.

You could discuss the phenomena of how their children are using social media to deal with the divorce.

How to recover from infidelity.

Political marriages.

Celebrity marriages.

2. Floods In South Eastern Part Of United States

The South is experiencing record rainfall and flooding. If you write on this topic or if the flooding impacts your marketplace in some way – then this would be a good topic to write about.

3, Unemployment

Unemployment is still a big problem globally, and it is covered in the news almost everyday. If you are a career coach, you could write about how to effectively apply for a job in today’s market.

You could also write about innovative and fresh ideas for making extra money. There are sites devoted to this that you could use as a resource. Here’s an article on finding a side hustle.

How to save money (budgeting, coupon cutting, etc.).

Stories on history of unemployment in your area and perhaps trends on what markets are easier to get into in that area.

Content on why your business is a great one to start in an economic recession.

4. Bin Laden Raid

There are a lot of stories and content being created around the Bin Laden Raid in Pakistan and the ramifications of that raid. If you cover political news, if you discuss religion or world issues – then you will see a nice surge of traffic from writing on this topic.

5. May 21 – Doomsday

At the time of this writing, this is one of the highest researched topics on the web right now. Write something quickly on this topic (and in my opinion how ridiculous it is:) and really blast it via social media and bookmarking sites to gain quick traction.

Bonus Tip
To always find hot topics that you can write about, search news sites like CNN or check recently searched for topics over at Alexa.com

Article Ideas For May

May 5, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 4 Comments

Article Ideas For May

May is a great month for writing new articles for your blog. There are tons of things going on. I wrote an article about general article ideas for May last year and all of the ideas are totally evergreen. You can write these year after year. Here’s the link to the original article:

http://lisaangelettieblog.com/may-article-ideas/

May Article Ideas

Go Local!
Another great idea for generating new articles during May is to think even smaller. What types of events, workshops, etc. are going on in your niche during May. For example, people who write about cancer (specifically breast cancer) can write several articles around the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. While these races go on at different times in different places, there may be one in your area in May (like in Philadelphia) and so someone could capitalize on all the great local search traffic these types of articles would generate.

Have fun with it!

April Article Ideas

March 28, 2011 By Lisa Angelettie 14 Comments

April Article Ideas & April Article Suggestions

april article ideas

Autism Awareness
This is a great time to write first-person stories about your family’s journey & autism. It’s also always a good idea to write basic autism articles, as there are many people who still aren’t sure what autism is and the wide range of disorders on the autism spectrum.

International Guitar Month
I love the sound of an acoustic guitar! This month is the time to celebrate that wonderful instrument. How-To Play articles, History of Guitar articles, Guitars From Around The World are great topics to cover. This is also a great topic for affiliate marketers.

Keep America Beautiful Month
Hopefully they are celebrating this one in your child’s school, but probably not:) So this is a good opportunity to write articles that give families ideas on how one person at a time can keep our country trash and pollution free.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month
This is a very important topic and one that a lot of mental health professionals, social workers, and people who have experience with this topic can write about.

National Frog Month
I don’t know much about frogs but I’m sure there are a lot of frog fans out there. Affiliate marketers can also capitalize on frog collector items, mementos, etc.

National Garden Month
This is a favorite one of mine! I love gardening and plenty of people are preparing their gardens right now for the summer. You could write literally hundreds of gardening tip articles on annual and perennial flowers as well as vegetables.

National Humor Month
The local and national news is depressing — I rather laugh. This is a great time to write funny pieces, promote your stand-up comedy act, or write comedy movie reviews.

National Parkinson’s Awareness Month
Exposure for this disease is starting to grow since celebrities like Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali have it — but it’s still a pretty wide-open topic to cover on the web. Awareness should be the goal for most articles.

National Volunteer Month
I always think about volunteering and I am always looking for opportunities for my children to get involved. Writing articles on volunteer opportunities (especially locally) would be a great idea. There are also a few books out there on volunteering for affiliate income opportunities.

National Mathematics Education Month
My children always do a math-a-thon fundraiser at school in April and it really does what articles around this time can do — and that’s raise an interest and awareness in mathematics for ourselves and our children.

National Poetry Month
Write a poem. Enter a poem contest. Write about great poets or unsung poets.

Stress Awareness Month
Great opportunity here to write about various stress relieving exercises, activities, tools, etc. You could also write about the effects of stress on mind & body. Stress is a great affiliate article marketing topic. There are digital guides as well as plenty of stress relieving products, books, and music to promote.

Week Long Topics
If you’re going to write a week-only topic for April,  you need to make sure that you’ve written and published several articles at least 2 weeks before the launch week. This ensures that the search engines see them and rank them. You will also include an article or two the week of and link them to the older articles. Week long topics you could write about for April include:

April 1st
April Fool’s Day
One Cent Day

April 2nd
Hans Christian Anderson’s Birthday
International Children’s Book Day

April 3rd
Find-A-Rainbow Day

April 5th
National Read a Road Map Day

April 7th
No Housework Day
World Health Day

Can I Post Magazine Articles To My Blog?

December 2, 2010 By Lisa Angelettie 7 Comments

After catching up on email over the past few days, I saw this interesting question about magazine articles from one of my favorite readers. I thought it was a good one, and one that I should clear up just in case you were thinking about doing this…

Q: Can I Post Magazine Articles To My Blog?

A: Remember when I told you in about a million other articles that the simple act of writing your content or typing your content protects you under U.S. copyright laws? These laws apply to everyone. So the same applies to articles you find in print mediums such as newspapers, magazines, journals, etc.

BUT what you can do, is this:

1. REFER to a portion of the magazine article that applies to what you are writing about and make sure to include appropriate attribution. For example, you can put the portion of the article in quotes or blockquotes and add an *asterisk symbol at the end of the quote which will refer to the author and publication of this magazine blurb.

Example: put your magazine chunk or blurb into blockquotes. *

*Lisa Angelettie – Article Marketing Strategies

You can also do this:

2. REWRITE a magazine article that you want to cover on your own blog. Make sure to include the magazine as a source for your article. This means that while you aren’t totally ripping them off, you are basing your article on information you gathered while reading an article in their publication. Again you’ll use the asterisk symbol at the end of the article with the source (*Source: Article Marketing Strategies)

This really applies to news related items. If you write a gossip blog and you read a article in US Weekly about Kim Kardashian and her new television show that you want to use on your blog – you can rewrite the news item and add US Weekly as a source for the article. (*Source: US Weekly)

It’s also a nice idea to link to the original article in your attribution footnote, but it’s not mandatory. It’s just nice to do for the publication.

The bottom line here is that you will not lose any credibility or cool points for properly attributing the source or the author of an article. In fact – you must do it or you will simply be a content thief and subject to copyright laws. So feel free to use magazine articles, refer to magazine articles, rewrite magazine articles – but make sure to give them their fair acknowledgment.

Bristol Palin Article Ideas

November 18, 2010 By Lisa Angelettie 3 Comments

Bristol Palin Article Ideas

Bristol Palin Article IdeasI can’t believe that I am writing this, but Bristol Palin is a hot topic on the internet. Of course my writing this article is only adding to her steadily increased traffic views – which I can live with – just as long as all of my article marketing buddies can capitalize on the soaring search trends as well. So here you go…

Search terms such as “Bristol Palin“, “Bristol Palin Dancing“, “Bristol Palin DTWS“, have had a significant growth in traffic this past month and folks are probably going to continue to talk about them for awhile — so writing articles and getting them published on high traffic sites and article directories would probably be a smart idea. The sooner the better.

Bonus Keyword Alert! One term that is well searched for over the last month but has way less page competition than the other search terms, therefore should be pretty easy to rank for, is “Bristol Palin Levi“. So this is of course first come first serve. Whoever reads this article and acts on it first will probably reap the SEO benefits.

At the time of this writing, Bristol Palin is still competing on the hit reality show Dancing With The Stars and is in the finals. Hoards of both conservative and liberal bloggers as well as print journalists are writing all about the details and ramifications of Bristol Palin supporters voting for her by the thousands (or maybe millions – I’m not sure) to keep her alive and dancing on the show. There is big controversy on both sides. Somewhat like last season’s controversy when Kate Gosselin (Jon and Kate Plus 8) appeared on the show.

While everyone is putting their two cents into writing on that topic (her surprising wins each week on the show), this is your chance to write articles that can capitalize on that high interest yet can stand the test of time beyond the end of this season of Dancing With The Stars. As always our goal is to give our articles longevity, although I strongly urge you to capitalize on hot topic traffic as well, when it’s possible.

Bristol Palin Article Idea #1

Write about what so many critics asked Kate Gosselin last year. Who is watching her baby when she is practicing all day for the show and is this what she should be doing as a new teen mom?

Bristol Palin Article Idea #2

How does this appearance give Bristol or her mother any political leverage? Did she do this for publicity for her mom? Was this all a grand master plan? Or just great timing?

Bristol Palin Article Idea #3

Write about the “new fame” in our world today. Young people like Bristol Palin, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton are all famous celebrities for doing much of nothing but just being “infamous”.

Bristol Palin Article Idea #4

Write about teen moms and the advantages or disadvantages of being a teen mom in today’s world vs. 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Use her as a reference in the article.

Bristol Palin Article Idea #5

Write about the children of famous people. The pros and cons. How tough it must be to mature as well as make mistakes in the public eye. Bristol Palin is on the show and getting all this attention because she is the daughter of a famous person (her mom Sarah Palin). Use her as a reference in the article.

Bristol Palin Article Idea #6

Write about the children of high profile political figures.

Bristol Palin Article Idea #7

If you want to try and capitalize on the bonus keyword term, you could write something along the lines of “Where Is Levi?”. We haven’t heard too much from him during Bristol’s stint on Dancing With The Stars. Is he spending time with his son while she is on set or is he out somewhere trying to capitalize on his fleeting fame?

Bristol Palin Article Idea #8

Another Levi angle could be that right before Bristol Palin started with the show, they gave an interview saying that they were back together and then they broke up again just as quickly. You could write an article questioning whether her appearance on the show was a show of confidence and independence from Levi? Hey – she’s a teenager, that could very well be what went on:)

Conclusion
Have any more ideas? Let us know. Also, if you write any cool new Bristol Palin articles, please come back and link to them in the comment section below. I’d love to read them!

September Article Ideas

September 9, 2010 By Lisa Angelettie 7 Comments

September Article Ideas

September 11

September Article Ideas

With the kids back at school or college, it’s time to kick your writing up a notch. Let’s crank out some great articles for September. Here are some article ideas to get your juices flowing…

September 11th

Write about the survivors of September 11th. What are they doing now? Have their lives changed in a significant way. For better. For worse. Write about the current political controversies surrounding the continued rebuilding of the area. Write about how this event affected people outside of New York, how it changed the way we view our “safety” as a nation.

Baby Safety Month Article Ideas

Write about topics such as high chairs, car seats, booster seats, toys, national recalls, fast food meal toy safety, dangerous things in the home, cleaning supplies, safety gates, SIDS, etc.

Better Breakfast Month Article Ideas

Write about the importance of a breakfast. Include statistics on school or work performance with and without eating breakfast. Also include menus and suggestions for breakfasts that are healthier, that taste better, and that are quick to make.

Cable TV Month Article Ideas

Write a piece on the history of Cable TV. Life with and without it. The cost of Cable television. You could write about lack of real competition for cable tv dollars.

Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month Article Ideas

My cousin was just diagnosed with some sort of fungus of the cornea. Both eyes. He wears contacts and if it isn’t addressed right away he could lose the sight of one of his eyes. We only have two! So you could write about children getting exams outside of school, safety when playing sports, possible eye diseases etc.

Classical Music Month Article Ideas

It’s important that we share the joy of classical music with the younger generations. Write about great composers, etc.

Library Card Sign-Up Month Article Ideas

If you write a few articles about the economy and tie it in with “escape reading” THEN add how can spend zero dollars for this by signing up at your local library – you’ll have a great article there!

National Chicken Month

Chicken recipes. Need I say more. Who doesn’t eat chicken?

National Courtesy Month Article Ideas

Let’s be a little nicer to each other. That’s what I told my daughter just today when we were shopping in Whole Foods. On the other hand, one of my other kids went on a playdate and the mother returned saying that she was well-mannered and a joy to be around. There’s something to be said about being courteous. Being kind. Being helpful and thankful. Write about it this month.

National Honey Month Article Ideas

Allergies are about to kick in strongly again. I take a spoonful of local honey to help build my immune system. Health benefits of honey! Types of honey. How honey is harvested from bees.

National Pediculosis Prevention Month Article Ideas

First of all, write an article defining what Pediculosis is. (Lice Infestation). This is the time of year that lice infestation kicks up – so write about traditional and alternative treatments. Write articles that debunk myths (only dirty people get lice), etc. Or simply write about what lice are, what they do, and why they do it to us!

National Piano Month Article Ideas

I’m about to rent a piano for my daughter to practice her lessons. The electronic keyboard doesn’t have all the keys. I sold my baby grand when we moved here. Big mistake! Pianos are pieces of art. Make sure to include lots of pics with your piano articles: making of piano, history of piano, types of pianos, etc. Famous people who play the piano: Elton John, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder

National Rice Month Article Ideas

Types of rices. Countries popular for rice crops. Rice recipes.

National School Success Month Article Ideas

This is a great time of year to write about schools who have “figured it out” and have amazing success stories. Innovative charter school stories. Everyday student stories. Articles in this niche that always do well are “Top Schools” in whatever city.

National Sewing Month Article Ideas

My daughter signed up for a two hour sewing class this month. The classes were not full which was fine by me, BUT it let’s me know that sewing is an art and a craft that has lost it’s popular appeal. It may soon be a lost art to the common man.

So it’s a great time to talk about sewing. Compare and contrast sewing in the home of yesteryear to how often we sew today — or rather who sews are garments today.

You could also write light stories about sewing the latest fashions. Sewing tips. Sewing for children. How to buy a sewing machine.

Read-A-New-Book Month Article Ideas

Sometimes my kids just don’t know what book to read next. This is a great topic to feature new authors, local authors, the hottest books on the shelves, etc. Talk about libraries and how it is so cost-efficient to borrow a book than buy one from the big local chains. Write about book groups and clubs. Write about how children are swapping books for fun.

Women of Achievement Month Article Ideas

Pick a woman you admire – write about her. Pick a woman in your community who is actually out there doing something – write about her. Pick a woman from the past who was an unsung hero for whatever reason – write about her. Write about the most powerful women in the media, entertainment, politics, etc.

Have any other September article ideas for your fellow writers? Share them with us in the comments section below.
